Phoenix Park Magazine Fort Walk: An Easy and Scenic 5km Walk in Dublin

If you are looking for an easy walk in Dublin that combines woodland trails, open green spaces, lovely views and a bit of history, this Phoenix Park Magazine Fort Walk is a great one to try.

I recently did this walk using the Hiiker app and really enjoyed it. At around 5km, with just 66 metres of elevation gain, it is a very manageable route that took me about 1 hour 30 minutes. It is ideal if you want to get outside for a gentle hike without having to leave the city.Another big plus is that dogs are allowed on a leash, making it a nice option for a weekend walk with your dog.

What I liked most about this route is the variety packed into a relatively short distance. You get some nice wooded stretches, wide open parkland, a good viewpoint near the Phoenix Park Cross, and a finish back at the historic Magazine Fort. It is also a very flexible walk, so you can easily shorten it or make it longer depending on how much time and energy you have.

For anyone searching for a short walk in Phoenix Park, a beginner-friendly hike in Dublin, or just a pleasant outdoor escape close to the city, this is a lovely option.

I started this walk from the car park on Khyber Road beside Magazine Fort, which is a very convenient place to begin. You could also park closer to the Phoenix Park Cross if that suits you better.

One of the best things about walking in Phoenix Park is that you are not tied to one rigid trail. There are so many paths and open sections that you can easily adapt the route to suit your day.

I started by climbing the hill on the right-hand side from the car park, which brought me into a really nice wooded area. This opening stretch was one of my favorite parts of the walk. For around the first kilometer, the trail feels peaceful and sheltered, with plenty of trees and a nice sense of being away from the city.

After that, I crossed the road and continued on towards the Phoenix Park Cross. This part of the walk opens up nicely and gives you a lovely view across the park. It is one of those spots that makes you stop for a moment and appreciate just how much open space Phoenix Park has.

From there, I carried on walking behind the US Ambassador’s Residence, following the back wall. I liked this section because it felt a bit quieter and less obvious than some of the busier parts of the park.

At around the 2km mark, I headed back into another wooded area for roughly 400 metres. Then the route opened out again as I crossed a large green space and started making my way back towards the starting point.

To finish the walk, I crossed the road again and continued straight ahead until I reached Magazine Fort and the car park.

Overall, this is not a difficult route, but it is a very enjoyable one. It has enough variety to keep things interesting, and because it is relatively short, it works really well for a casual morning or afternoon outing.

This is an easy Phoenix Park walk and should suit most people.

There is a short climb near the beginning, but nothing too demanding. Other than that, the route is mostly straightforward and gentle. If you are looking for a beginner-friendly walk in Dublin, this is a good one to keep in mind.

It would suit:

  • beginner hikers
  • families
  • anyone looking for a short weekend walk
  • people who want a scenic route without too much effort

Yes, very easily.

That is one of the reasons I would recommend this route. Because it is in Phoenix Park, you can shorten it if you just want a quick stroll, or make it longer by exploring more of the surrounding paths and landmarks.

That flexibility makes it ideal for days when you want to head out walking but do not necessarily want to commit to a long hike.

The handiest place to park is the car park on Khyber Road beside Magazine Fort.

You could also start from other points in Phoenix Park, including near the Phoenix Park Cross, but I found the Khyber Road car park a very practical place to begin and end the walk.

One of the big advantages of this walk is that Phoenix Park is very easy to access from Dublin city.

If you do not want to drive, there are plenty of public transport options that can get you close to the park, depending on where you are coming from. That makes this a great choice if you want a walk that feels spacious and scenic without needing a big day of travel.

As with most walks in Phoenix Park, facilities will depend a bit on exactly where you start and finish. Because this is a city park, you are never too far from roads, cafés or other amenities, which makes it a very easy walk to plan.

I would still recommend bringing:

  • water
  • comfortable walking shoes
  • a rain jacket
  • an extra layer if the weather is cool

Woodland at the start

The opening section through the trees is calm, scenic and a lovely way to ease into the walk.

Views near Phoenix Park Cross

This is one of the nicest visual points on the route, with open views across the park.

A nice mix of scenery

This walk changes nicely between wooded paths, boundary walls and big open grassy areas.

Magazine Fort

Starting and finishing near Magazine Fort gives the route a bit of character and historical interest.

Easy to adapt

You can easily turn this into a shorter walk or add extra distance if you want more.

One of the most famous things about Phoenix Park is its deer herd. Seeing deer roaming through the park is always a bit special, and it is one of the things that gives Phoenix Park such a unique feel compared with other city parks.

Another great fact is that Phoenix Park is one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital city. When you are out walking there, especially in the more open sections, you really get a sense of that scale.

And of course, this walk starts beside Magazine Fort, one of the park’s most interesting historic landmarks. It adds a bit of extra character to the route and makes the starting point feel more memorable than a standard city park car park.

After finishing the walk, I would really recommend heading to Baa Baa Café in Chapelizod.

This was such a good post-walk stop. The food was absolutely fabulous. I had a Middle Eastern-style lamb dish with homemade bread, tzatziki, pomegranate, couscous and salad, and honestly, it was some of the best food I have had in quite a while.

Sometimes a food stop after a hike is just a nice extra. In this case, it genuinely felt like part of the experience. If you enjoy combining a walk with a really good meal afterwards, this is well worth doing.

Yes, definitely.

If you are looking for an easy walk in Phoenix Park, a short Dublin hike, or a route that gives you a mix of woodland, views and open space without too much effort, this one is well worth doing.

It is not a dramatic mountain trail, but that is exactly why it works so well. It is accessible, scenic, flexible and easy to fit into a normal day. I would happily recommend it to anyone who wants a simple but rewarding walk in Dublin.

I really enjoyed this Phoenix Park Magazine Fort Walk. It is short, scenic and easy to follow, but still has enough variety to make it feel like a proper outing rather than just a quick stroll around the park.

The woodland section at the start, the views near the Phoenix Park Cross, the open green spaces and the finish back at Magazine Fort all come together to make this a really nice route. Add in a stop at Baa Baa Café in Chapelizod afterwards, and you have the makings of a brilliant low-effort day out in Dublin.

If you are building a list of the best walks near Dublin that are easy, enjoyable and close to the city, this one deserves a place on it.
